Egg Drop Challenge

Students explore design and manufacturing concepts by designing, building, testing, improving, and executing a device to protect an egg from breaking when dropped from a minimum height. 

Time: 90 minutes; implemented in one session

Materials:

  • Computer with projector, speakers, and Internet access (for videos listed in the activity)

  • PowerPoint: Egg Drop Challenge!

  • Activity Leader Checklist

  • Tell My Story Form

  • Student Handouts (1 per student)

  • Pen or pencil (1 per student)

  • Hand wipes or paper towels for cleanup

  • Additional supplies:

    • 20 sponges

    • 36 straws

    • 2 bags of cotton balls

    • 50 pipe cleaners

    • 20 pieces of paper

    • 5 rolls of clear or masking tape

    • 5 balls of string

    • 2 bags of large marshmallows

    • 10 uncooked eggs

Cost: US$40 in materials costs when completing this activity with 20 students organized into teams of five students.
